Maggie Curtis

Portfolio (1)

A vein of wry humour runs through much of Maggie's varied and experimental work. One of her projects was the creation of a series of extraordinary life-size models which were used effectively for advertising purposes, including three figures (two automated) for Christies' stand at the Ideal Home Exhibition. Other commissions have included a communion set, master models for a door knob manufacturer, a fountain and a full dinner service. Her architectural design work has been featured in The Times Magazine, Country Living, House Beautiful, Libertys, Devon Today, Craft Magazine, Craftsman Magazine, Ceramic Review and Glazed Expressions (magazine of the Tile and Architectural Ceramic Association).

Most of Maggie's pieces are designed and handmade to the specifications of individual customers.

The Fisherman

The building of the fisherman has been a personal project for me - my aunt Lucy died last year aged 97, leaving a collection of photographs dating back to her childhood.

The images of her uncles and cousins, who fished the seas from Lyme Regis in the 1920's, reminded me of my own childhood memories of the fishermen here in Appledore.

The only difference was the catch: in Lyme, lobsters, mackerel and prawns; in Appledore, mackerel, bass and most famously salmon.

This piece is soon to be permanently cemented onto a high wall - the fisherman here is temporarily mounted on plywood for display.
